The gateway to the Arctic Ocean
The northernmost Ocean of the world is the closest sea for the people living on the top of Finland. You could call the furthest Lapland the gateway to the Arctic Ocean.
"When the cold wind from the North blows, we are aware it comes from the Arctic Ocean."
We are well connected to this huge Arctic wonder. The shore is an hour's drive away from the border of our country. When the cold wind from the North blows, we are aware it comes from the Arctic Ocean. That is the same place where many of our beautiful rivers and streams run into as well as where the fish swimming in them come from. There are even Finnish communities who sought better conditions, on the shore of Northern Norway.
"there are huge monsters in the bottom of the sea"
A lot of seafood comes from the ocean to us. The king crab is a highly considered delicacy even though the spread of the species might be a threat to the balance of nature. They are even called the "red gold". I have tasted and cooked this treat a few times and enjoyed it. You just have to know how to cut the shell off and remove the flesh.
There are local legends about the giant crabs. It is said that there are huge monsters in the bottom of the sea, almost two meters wide.
The Arctic Ocean is my favorite ocean for many reasons and definitely worth visiting. The fact that I love everything arctic and northern but also the fact that the ocean has mountain coasts, ice, an extremely beautiful color and mysterious creatures in it, makes it very intriguing, don't you think?
